Harmful Law Defeated in Riverhead Protecting Local MFG

(11/6/2023 Riverhead, NY) On January 4th IgniteLI, the Manufacturing Consortium of Long Island joined a coalition to protect businesses in the Town of Riverhead. Headed by Kyle Strober, Executive Director of the Association for a Better Long Island, Patrick Boyle, Executive Director of IgniteLI, and Michael Florio, CEO of Long Island Builders Institute signed on to support the opposition of a bill that would create a moratorium on industrial development.

Citing business confidence to grow, Patrick Boyle spoke before the Town Board, “Businesses leave Long Island every day because the environment is too hostile, the cost of business is too high, skilled labor is difficult to come by and local governments impose increasingly more regulations limiting what they can do with their own property.” The legislation would create a 6-month “moratorium” on development in lots zoned industrial, currently, there are more than 1 million square feet of industrial development proposed in Calverton outside of the Calverton Enterprise Park, including “cube” warehouses and logistics centers.

The Riverhead Town Board voted 3-2 to decline to schedule a public hearing on the proposed moratorium. Councilman Rothwell commented that the moratorium was improper and did not support the town taking away rights from landowners, especially in a “blanket moratorium” like the one before the board.

IgniteLI applauds the Town Board for their wisdom in voting down the moratorium and seeks to work with the residents to develop a path forward that respects the rights of all and the welfare of the community.
